Stone Soup - Helps with Remembering Order of Events
Monday 27th January
Firstly the teacher read the children a story called 'stone Soup' of which the children could join in and actions were used to make the story easier to remember, but also so that later the children could retell the story in the right order of sequence of events.
In the morning I took a few children who needed to finish off some maths work on time into the corridor whilst they made some small changes to their work i.e. remembering to write the time underneath the clock, as well as drawing the hands in the correct place on the clock faces.
In maths I worked with red group (lower ability set) and I was teaching the children how to add up, using items from a made up food menu: so 1 cake at 6p and 1 hotdog at 12p would be the number sentence 6p + 12p = 18p and I got the children to use a number line so that they could add the numbers. I found that working with the children individually worked better than trying to teach them all in a big group as their attention would wander and some of the children would not know what they were doing, however when I worked with individuals they seemed to understand what to do much more easily.
Whilst the children were in their ICT session I heard some readers and I also helped out with reading buddies where the children are paired with an older child (Y4/Y6) who hears the younger child read and records it in the reading diary.
Wednesday 29th January 14
Working 1:1 with some children we worked on some corrections for Maths, which were done in purple pencil so the teacher could see the changes in answers. The maths problems were also form a menu adding up two items like what the other Y1 class were doing on Monday. Again we used a number line so the child could see how to add up by moving forward so many spaces on the line.
Next I worked with some children on practicing sentences, looking for capital letters, finger spacing between words ,a full stop and also to see if they could add a 'wow' word to their sentence such as a describing word like 'crackly.'
I also supported red group in Maths this was where they would roll two dice and write the number sentence for it e.g. rolling a 3 and a 1 would be 3 +1 = 4 and they could also use a number line to help them add up.
I also heard some readers in order of priority form the teacher's list and helped the children get ready for P.E. and then I heard some more readers until it was time to get the lunch bags and put the reading bags out along with the books - a group of children usually like to help with this too.
This class have also been doing about 'Stone Soup' to help order the events of which the story takes place, they can do this by using actions or picture cards or worksheets with the story on and they have to cut them up and stick them in the right order!

Different Types of Home
Monday 20th January 2014
Today the children were looking at different kinds of buildings that we may live in such as a flat, house, semi-detached, detached or terraced house. I spent the day working with individual children, I worked with red group (lower ability) individually on recognising and writing numbers as well as counting to 10 or 20 depending on their ability. I worked with one girl in phonics on 'ai' and 'th' sounds as well as could she write words such as 'blend' 'tramp' 'think' and 'thank' and could she put the sound buttons on these? (this is where you underline sounds and put dots under individual letters).
While the children had ICT I heard some readers and made a log of their record both in their home diary reading record and in the green folder. I also took some children to do some adding and/or subtracting numbers depending on their ability. We used cubes to help with adding and subtracting.
Wednesday 22nd January 2014
Again in 1J the children were looking at different kinds of homes that people live in and what kind of people they think may live there e.g. a couple may only need a 1 bedroom flat as they can share, a disabled man may live in a bungalow and a family may live in a 3 bedroom house etc. I worked with green and red sets individually seeing if they could recognise certain higher level CVC words and for the more able, if they could write them or use a sentence with them in.I also helped red group with adding and subtracting and we used the maths cubes to help with this, for the less able children, we did number counting and number recognition instead.
As usual I helped some children get ready for P.E. and I heard a few readers. The teacher has also just introduced a noise monitor - 5, too noisy, 4-noisy, 3-getting quieter, 2-quiet, 1-perfect and 0-silence, the level should be between 2-0, with 2 being acceptable for group work, and so I was helping to implement this.

A New Term - January 2014
Wednesday 8th January 2014
There was no placement on Monday due to a training day.
In 1J we were looking at different materials and the children were asked what these materials felt like e.g. cotton wool is soft, tin is shiny etc. This was part of a science topic that the children have been enjoying!
I heard a lot of the children read as many had not read from before the Christmas break. In the afternoon I helped some f the children change for P.E and helped a group of children get out the book bags and reading books for home time.
Monday 13th January
In 1G I heard quite a few readers and helped some children in ICT that they now have on a Monday, mostly just helping them log off the computer not with the actual work as they need to demonstrate understanding of this themselves. We also had a lady come from Sheffield council about the Eco Transport Initiative. This is about not only being green about transport but also about keeping the school gates clear and thereby making it safer for the children outside the school gates. I helped the children make an eco tree which they drew around their hands and then we cut out these and they were stuck on a tree to make leaves. Green hands represented an ecological method of getting to school e.g. walking or public transport and brown hand leaves represented coming by car, the green is for healthy leaves and brown is for leaves that were dying. The children also got to design posters of what they noticed on their journey to school. The lady gave a prize to the children with the best posters and every child got a pencil for taking part. I mostly helped the children with cutting out their hand leaf.
Wednesday 15th January
In maths I worked with two children playing Snakes and Ladders, helping them to recognise the higher numbers and help with taking turns as well as the game rules (lower ability set). During Literacy I helped children from green group with sentence practice, so did they remember to use a capital letter, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end of the sentence? In assembly time I heard a child read as part of reading buddies, he has SEN mad usually struggles to concentrate, however he did brilliantly with reading. In the afternoon I helped some children get ready for P.E. and took a child for first aid, I kept an ice pack on the child's foot (under instruction to do so) as they had had an accidental bump from another child. The other child had been rocking on their chair and it had come down on the boy's foot. He was fine and a note was sent home with him.

A Whole Lotta Placement!
I have not updated this blog in quite some time, but luckily however I make notes as I go along so here are the latest blog entries:-
Monday 9th December
The children had their new teacher start; Mrs Grayson who is lovely, works with them Monday to alternating Wednesday and Ms Kidd who works alternating Wednesday to Friday. I will always be working with Mrs Grayson as this is the day I spend in 1K/G and the other is in 1J.
The children took part in singing practice for the nativity and it was great to see them really enjoying doing the actions along with singing.
I was also helping Mrs Grayson learn the names of the children and I heard a lot of readers in the afternoon. In maths I helped some children with their tally chart work, and in phonics we did a recap of some of the phonic sounds. I also helped with behaviour management in the classroom.
Wednesday 11th December
In 1J on Wednesday the children had the practice dress rehearsal for their nativity and so I helped them get ready into their angel outfits and tied tinsel halos around their heads and tinsel sashes around their waists. The dress rehersal went well and the children looked and sang great!
This took up most of the day with the exception of helping some children with some reading and sentence practice and also I did some tally chart work in Maths with a group of children.
Monday 16th December
1K/G went to watch the dress rehearsal of Y3/4 and this took up all of the morning session. I was then helping to make Christmas cards with the children in the afternoon and I heard a few readers. The children could also choose to do a variety of Christmas activities or play as we were heading towards the Christmas holidays.
Wednesday 18th December
In 1J on Wednesday I helped to support some children to make robots out of materials they had brought in. I also helped some of the lower ability set to write a message in their Christmas cards that they were sending home. In the afternoon I did CVC words with a child and read a story to the children. Finally I also helped Jill the TA with resources for the paper-chains the children were making to decorate the classroom. I helped Jill cut sections of card with the guillotine. The paper chains looked fabulous and made the classroom look bright!

The Christmas Fayre!!!
Friday 6th December 2013
I didn't go into Rivelin Primary on Wednesday, but however went in on Friday instead to help out with the Christmas fayre. The children were very excitable and had a lot of energy, looking forward to selling things on their stall and going around the school to see the other stalls and attractions.
I firstly sorted out all of IJ's gift bags for the stall, just sealing them so you couldn't see the goodies that were inside! Then I helped some children set up the stall and make the pick a stick game, which is where a person takes a stick that has one end hidden in the sand and if it has a white or purple mark on the other end then that person has won a prize! So I was helping the children bury the sticks in the sand tray. We also placed all of 1D's gift bags out for sale.
The Christmas fayre wasn't until the afternoon, there was a lot of setting up to do, and therefore the children got an extended lunch break and extra time to run around. When it was time for the fayre I was supervising the children from both classes that weren't on a stall or going around with their parents/ a TA and there was a complicated system of taking a group of children every 15 minutes to their stall going through the very busy packed halls; and also taking the other children back, whilst also working out which children were leaving with their parents (with a TA's assistance of course). It was fun supervising the children I played snakes and ladders with some of them, and did colouring with some others. I did a lot of behaviour management and making sure the children didn't get lost in the corridors or wander off into the hall.
The children were delighted to sell all of their gift bags, and this was done rather rapidly! so much so the teachers had to come up with new games for the stall which there was definitely some improvising going on! It was good fun and all money raised goes back into the school and the children on the school council decide where the money goes! The children in the whole school put a lot of effort into their enterprise and it paid off really well for them.

Lots of Activities and Getting Ready for the Christmas Fayre!
Monday 2nd December 2013
I did heard some children read while the teacher was taking the register and sorting out what the children have for lunch.
The children have been looking at instructions and how to write these, for example 'what we need' and 'what we do' concepts of giving and following instructions. So they have been looking at how to catch a witch, and they had to come up with instructions for this, 1 child came up with putting a potion in front of her to tempt her into the trap which was a cage. Another child came up with tying her up with a rope and then the teacher went through 'what we need' and 'what we do' concepts with the children on the interactive whiteboard.
I helped some children with instructions on what planet they would like to visit and how to get there, they also had to write about what they would like to do when they get there! It was interesting that most children chose Earth instead of another planet. Anyway they had to use instructions and time connectives such as 'First', 'Next,' 'Finally' 'Then' etc and they are just starting to grasp this idea now.
In numeracy we did about subtracting using the number grid so the children can draw lines to the numbers to see how many 'to jump back' which gives them the answer.
In phonics I was helping a child with different sounds of letters. I have learned that a digraph has 2 letters like 'ow' in 'how' and a trigraph has 3 letters in it like 'igh' in 'high.' Phoneme is the sound that the letters make and grapheme is the symbol of that letter/combination of letters.
We were doing the sounds 'ay' 'ow' 'ai' 'ie' 'ea' 'igh' 'ey' 'oi' 'oy' 'ir' and confusing for the children 'I' which is a word in it's self. Some of the words that were brought up were 'might' 'destroy' 'cow' 'coin' 'money' etc.
I helped some children make some rockets throughout the day, it was a little side project to some of the other work they had been doing. I helped to make three rockets and my creative abilities seemed to get worse with each rocket, but however the children's enthusiasm for their individual rockets increased with each poorly crafted rocket - very funny! 1 child could make a rocket completely independently which was very impressive!
Finally I oversaw some children making some reindeer gift bags for the Christmas fayre on Friday. They turned out really good and we must have got to nearly 40 or so! The children were great at organising who was going to do drawing some ears when we had run out, while another child cut them out etc. so there was so,me good planning and production going on.
It would be Mrs Dungworth's final day on Tuesday, so this was the last day I would be seeing her, which is sad as she is a brilliant teacher, however the class will be having two nice teachers taking over from then on, sharing the week with half doing a few days and another doing a couple of days, so it will be interesting to see how they will teach and how it will vary from Mrs D. What will also be interesting is how they communicate with eachother about activities as they share their teaching time in the classroom.

Thinking of an Idea and Writing an Interesting Sentence About It!
Wednesday 27th November 2013
I helped a child in the morning identifying real vs non real words, e.g. reading the word off the board and sounding it out phonetically to them so that they could decide if the word was real or not.
A teacher from another class wanted a child taking to the first aid office because she had a nose bleed so I took her there, and we got her nose seen to and a note for her parents. She was okay and the nose bleed did stop quite quickly.
I took a group of different children throughout the day and working with the child one-to-one seeing if they could come up with an interesting sentence, say it, write it and check it! So for example the child could look at a book to help them or come up with an idea off the top of their head, first they would say it to me - one child said, 'The snowman was white and cold,' so once she had said this I got her to write it on her whiteboard, using cursive letters for good writing practice. Next we checked it, looking for a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, finger spacing between words and a full stop at the end of the sentence. The aim of the activity is to see if these children could hit the target of a 1C most are already working at this level but just need a little boost. There were some brilliant sentences written!
The children in both classes in year 1 use that of standard letters and sounds in phonics, but also use the jolly phonics actions in conjunction with the sounds.
I asked Mrs J if she thinks there is anything I could do better to assist her, particularly I was thinking about the morning when I feel a little lost when the parents are helping with the first activity before the register. Anyway she thinks I could concentrate on behaviour management of the children, especially when working in small groups. It would also be good to look at any dwindling resources e.g. could the pencils be sharpened or the superstar tickets topped up for example, and finally it is okay to get some children and work on anything I think they need to improve, e.g. it will not be stepping on the teacher's toes! So I can have that little bit more responsibility now which is good news, at least now I know what I can do that will be more effective in supporting the teacher and the children in 1J. I like to now for personal development and to set targets and see if I have reached them.
I am hoping to help 1J out next Friday with some items they need to do for the Christmas fayre, however the day clashes with college so it just depends on what is happening there too.
