Monday 20th January 2014
Today the children were looking at different kinds of buildings that we may live in such as a flat, house, semi-detached, detached or terraced house. I spent the day working with individual children, I worked with red group (lower ability) individually on recognising and writing numbers as well as counting to 10 or 20 depending on their ability. I worked with one girl in phonics on 'ai' and 'th' sounds as well as could she write words such as 'blend' 'tramp' 'think' and 'thank' and could she put the sound buttons on these? (this is where you underline sounds and put dots under individual letters).
While the children had ICT I heard some readers and made a log of their record both in their home diary reading record and in the green folder. I also took some children to do some adding and/or subtracting numbers depending on their ability. We used cubes to help with adding and subtracting.

Again in 1J the children were looking at different kinds of homes that people live in and what kind of people they think may live there e.g. a couple may only need a 1 bedroom flat as they can share, a disabled man may live in a bungalow and a family may live in a 3 bedroom house etc. I worked with green and red sets individually seeing if they could recognise certain higher level CVC words and for the more able, if they could write them or use a sentence with them in.I also helped red group with adding and subtracting and we used the maths cubes to help with this, for the less able children, we did number counting and number recognition instead.
As usual I helped some children get ready for P.E. and I heard a few readers. The teacher has also just introduced a noise monitor - 5, too noisy, 4-noisy, 3-getting quieter, 2-quiet, 1-perfect and 0-silence, the level should be between 2-0, with 2 being acceptable for group work, and so I was helping to implement this.

A New Term - January 2014
Wednesday 8th January 2014
There was no placement on Monday due to a training day.
In 1J we were looking at different materials and the children were asked what these materials felt like e.g. cotton wool is soft, tin is shiny etc. This was part of a science topic that the children have been enjoying!
I heard a lot of the children read as many had not read from before the Christmas break. In the afternoon I helped some f the children change for P.E and helped a group of children get out the book bags and reading books for home time.
Monday 13th January
In 1G I heard quite a few readers and helped some children in ICT that they now have on a Monday, mostly just helping them log off the computer not with the actual work as they need to demonstrate understanding of this themselves. We also had a lady come from Sheffield council about the Eco Transport Initiative. This is about not only being green about transport but also about keeping the school gates clear and thereby making it safer for the children outside the school gates. I helped the children make an eco tree which they drew around their hands and then we cut out these and they were stuck on a tree to make leaves. Green hands represented an ecological method of getting to school e.g. walking or public transport and brown hand leaves represented coming by car, the green is for healthy leaves and brown is for leaves that were dying. The children also got to design posters of what they noticed on their journey to school. The lady gave a prize to the children with the best posters and every child got a pencil for taking part. I mostly helped the children with cutting out their hand leaf.
Wednesday 15th January
In maths I worked with two children playing Snakes and Ladders, helping them to recognise the higher numbers and help with taking turns as well as the game rules (lower ability set). During Literacy I helped children from green group with sentence practice, so did they remember to use a capital letter, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end of the sentence? In assembly time I heard a child read as part of reading buddies, he has SEN mad usually struggles to concentrate, however he did brilliantly with reading. In the afternoon I helped some children get ready for P.E. and took a child for first aid, I kept an ice pack on the child's foot (under instruction to do so) as they had had an accidental bump from another child. The other child had been rocking on their chair and it had come down on the boy's foot. He was fine and a note was sent home with him.

A Whole Lotta Placement!
I have not updated this blog in quite some time, but luckily however I make notes as I go along so here are the latest blog entries:-
Monday 9th December
The children had their new teacher start; Mrs Grayson who is lovely, works with them Monday to alternating Wednesday and Ms Kidd who works alternating Wednesday to Friday. I will always be working with Mrs Grayson as this is the day I spend in 1K/G and the other is in 1J.
The children took part in singing practice for the nativity and it was great to see them really enjoying doing the actions along with singing.
I was also helping Mrs Grayson learn the names of the children and I heard a lot of readers in the afternoon. In maths I helped some children with their tally chart work, and in phonics we did a recap of some of the phonic sounds. I also helped with behaviour management in the classroom.
Wednesday 11th December
In 1J on Wednesday the children had the practice dress rehearsal for their nativity and so I helped them get ready into their angel outfits and tied tinsel halos around their heads and tinsel sashes around their waists. The dress rehersal went well and the children looked and sang great!
This took up most of the day with the exception of helping some children with some reading and sentence practice and also I did some tally chart work in Maths with a group of children.
Monday 16th December
1K/G went to watch the dress rehearsal of Y3/4 and this took up all of the morning session. I was then helping to make Christmas cards with the children in the afternoon and I heard a few readers. The children could also choose to do a variety of Christmas activities or play as we were heading towards the Christmas holidays.
Wednesday 18th December
In 1J on Wednesday I helped to support some children to make robots out of materials they had brought in. I also helped some of the lower ability set to write a message in their Christmas cards that they were sending home. In the afternoon I did CVC words with a child and read a story to the children. Finally I also helped Jill the TA with resources for the paper-chains the children were making to decorate the classroom. I helped Jill cut sections of card with the guillotine. The paper chains looked fabulous and made the classroom look bright!
